Ways to Connect

Midnight North
WEXT

Midnight North, led by songwriters Elliott Peck and Grahame Lesh, released their third album, "Under The Lights" to great acclaim earlier this year.  When they stopped in town to play a show this past September, we were fortunate enough to get to sit with them and discuss everything from Grateful Dead shows and their own eclectic brand of music to their home base of Terrapin Crossroads.

WEXT

In this Live@EXT session, hear Jackie Greene, the one-time member of Black Crowes and Trigger Hippy talk about the impetus for creating two EP's, recording solo in a noisy Brooklyn basement and  growing up; "It sounds like a country song, but it's true," Jackie says.  "My dad and mom split up when I was a kid and he left behind his acoustic guitar.  I don't know, maybe I was about 10.  I took piano lessons for a little while.  Took guitar lessons for about 2 mo

WEXT

Americana treasure and New York punk troubadour Jesse Malin stopped by and talked to Dave Michaels about his early hardcore days before turning down the volume of his music.  "What I felt was we were playing out in these big venues, opening for these really big bands and everybody at that time wanted to mosh, the mosh pit, ya know", Jesse explains.  "I went back down to acoustic guitar.  I think there's a real connection between folk and punk be

Adrenaline Pumpkin
WEXT

Every October, four guys come out of the pumpkin patch to play groovy tunes to the folks who come out to Sunnyside Gardens in Saratoga.  Johnny Twoseeds, A. Pumpkin, C. Pumpkin and O. Pumpkin are Adrenaline Pumpkin.  See these guys Saturdays and Sundays from 12-4p.

Somehow we convinced them to leave the pumpkin patch and the donuts and apple cider to come play a few tunes for us on the radio.

Alyssa Rose
WEXT

One of our recent discoveries has been a singer songwriter from the Syracuse area by the name of Alyssa Rose.  She's recently released her new EP of songs called "Tumbleweed."  Here's a chance to hear what she's all about in a new Live @ EXT session.

WEXT

His birthdate puts him squarely in the middle of Generation X, but Greg Klyma is an old-school troubadour. His enduring themes, articulate and amusing stories, and populist ideals make him one of those rare young artists who is carrying the torch of Woody and Ramblin' Jack.

Jeff Brisbin
WEXT

Saratoga Springs musician, Local 518 Jeff Brisbin has released his latest album - a labor of love for sure. It's called "Foreverly." He joined us to talk about the genesis of the album, play a few songs, and share some good times.

10 String Symphony
WEXT

Rachel Baiman and Christian Sedelmyer, two 5-String fiddle players from Nashville have been making waves, both on their own and recently as 10 String Symphony. Christian plays with Jerry Douglas' band, and Rachel Baiman has her solo career, too. She released "Shame" to the world earlier this year.

The Nell Robinson & Jim Nunnally Band
WEXT

Hillary Perkins, a.k.a. Nell Robinson met Jim Nunally at a jam. Pretty quickly, they realized they share musical thoughts. The two embarked on their next journey, which has resulted in a couple albums, a cool concept show, and the latest recording, "Baby, Let's Take The Long Way Home."

Nell and Jim have teamed up with Jon Arkin (percussion) and Jim Kerwin (bass) to form the band that stopped by our studios on Friday (9/15/17).

Edison
WEXT

The Colorado trio known as Edison dropped by to talk about and play songs from their new album, "Familiar Spirit."

New York-based singer-songwriter Bill Scorzari paints a lush folk music landscape with compelling lyrics and a rough, worn voice that draws you in.  His independently released sophomore album, Through These Waves is out now.  Produced by Jonah Tolchin (Yep Roc) and engineered, mixed, and mastered by Billy Bennett, the album of all original material was recorded over twelve days at the famed Bomb Shelter in East Nashville through the studio’s 1970’s MCI console and mixed to tape.

Lonely Heartstring Band
Agency

It's been a year since the release of the Lonely Heartstring Band's debut album, "Deep Waters." The guys have been busy playing festivals and touring. They've played Greyfox Bluegrass and call The Cock N Bull "home away from home." They stopped by to record a session before their most recent visit to The Bull.

WEXT

Local 518  brother and sister Jocelyn & Chris Arndt have been among our faves for several years!  Hear them tell Dave Michaels how they juggled attending Harvard University while writing, recording and touring relentlessly across America.  In the moments when they're not busy, Jocelyn likes to read while Chris explores his cooking abilities.

The Kamikaze Hearts circa 2017
WEXT

Ten years ago, on 07-07-07, WEXT began its quest to leave regular radio behind.  When you joined us on the journey on that fateful day, the first song you heard was by a great Local 518 band known as The Kamikaze Hearts.  We chose to play their song "Ash Wednesday" as the first song - it was to signify that local music and the musicians who create it was paramount to our mission. It still is - ten years later!

WEXT

He's a writer, producer, performer, musician, lion tamer and phlebotomist.  Okay maybe not the last two, but Sandy McKnight is certainly an entertaining jack-of-all-trades!  Sandy dropped by to play some songs and talk about his music projects, tv show and upcoming shows.

Keep up with Sandy at his website.

Martin Sexton
WEXT

Syracuse native, and a veteran of playing the streets of Boston, Martin Sexton dropped by and talked a little about his experiences being on the ground with his transient, commuter audiences.  And he sang songs and talk about his album "Mixtape of the Open Road."

Dale and Ray
WEXT

Dale Watson and Ray Benson have known each other for decades.  The two Texas Troubadours have criss-crossed the country and each other's paths through the years. Both have thought that they should eventually sit down to make music together.  Well, they did! The result is the new album "Dale & Ray."

After they performed a show at The Egg, the two sat down in an early morning session with Chris Wienk.  Discussion ran the gamut from music, to their friendship, and of course the beloved tour bus.

The Suitcase Junket
WEXT

Matt Lorenz a.k.a. The Suitcase Junket  stopped by to play tunes from his Signature Sounds debut, Pile Driver. Matt played with his full set-up, bone box and all! He talked about the new record, the pros and cons of being a one man band, and why the world needs more righteous women.

Check out videos of the songs below the audio of the full session.

KT Tunstall
WEXT

Singer-songwriter, KT Tunstall stopped by to play a few songs and talk about her latest endeavor, "Kin."  Enjoy!

Artist

Ryan Montbleau has been an acclaimed singer, songwriter, and bandleader for more than a decade, but with his new album I Was Just Leaving, the New England-based artist has truly arrived. Contemplative and richly emotive, the album offers a glimpse into the often-lonesome life of the relentlessly traveling troubadour, a strikingly single-minded existence too often clouded by the blur of constant motion.

Anti- Records

Our very good friend and acclaimed Local 518 singer-songwriter Sean Rowe dropped by to catch up and talk about his journey of recording a new album (NEW LORE out 4/8 on Anti- Records), what it means to be an independent artist and much, much more.

Armed only with two amps, a pedal board, one weathered six-string guitar and his unmistakable baritone voice, Sean treated us to two new songs and a Leonard Cohen cover!
