After leaving her home in the Bronx as a teenager, Alynda Segarra hitchhiked, train hopped, and made her way to New Orleans where she learned how to play music and started the band Hurray for the Riff Raff. Segarra has proven herself to be a prominent voice for a new generation of folk singer-songwriters. Hurray for the Riff Raff's new album "The Navigator" strays a bit from the band's traditional folk sound, but Segarra shines as she tunes in to her Puerto Rican roots, and shares a powerful message and story.

Hillary Perkins, a.k.a. Nell Robinson met Jim Nunally at a jam. Pretty quickly, they realized they share musical thoughts. The two embarked on their next journey, which has resulted in a couple albums, a cool concept show, and the latest recording, "Baby, Let's Take The Long Way Home."

Nell and Jim have teamed up with Jon Arkin (percussion) and Jim Kerwin (bass) to form the band that stopped by our studios on Friday (9/15/17).

One of my favorite DJ's is Wanda Fischer. She has this way on the radio that makes you feel like you've been friends forever. She is a true treasure. So, when I heard that Wanda was about to celebrate her 35th year as our Saturday night companion on WAMC's Hudson River Sampler, I thought I had to get her over to talk about some of those memories and have her play some of her favorite songs.

Rolling Stone once referred to Sarah Jarosz as "Gillian Welch's long lost daughter." A mandolin and banjo prodigy who graduated from the New England Conservancy of Music with honors, Sarah Jarosz, continues to make strides in the contemporary bluegrass world. Her most recent album "Undercurrent" won her two Grammy Awards in 2017-for Best Folk Album of the Year and for Best American Roots Performance for "House of Mercy." She also won the award for 2017 Folk Album of the Year from Folk Alliance International.

Caitlin Canty made a tour stop at Caffe Lena on June 1st.  She stopped by to play a few songs, including a new - as yet unreleased - track that will hopefully be on the new album coming in 2018.

David Wax Museum

David Wax Museum is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2017.  They debuted the same year WEXT did.  We have been big fans of David and Suz and the band for the whole time.  Before they headed over to The Linda to play a show as the "duo," like in the old days, David and Suz stopped by with their two children and played us these amazing songs. We talk about their most recent album and EP, and potential new music in our future.

KTG and Joseph Thompson

Director of Mass MoCA, Joseph Thompson, stopped by the station to talk with KTG about the museum's newly renovated wing. With the expansion, Mass MoCA will have more gallery space than any other contemporary art museum in the country. The new space with feature installations from Jenny Holzer, Robert Rauschenberg, Louise Bourgeious, James Turrell, Laurie Anderson and Gunnar Schonbeck. The addition will add even more to the already culturally rich region, dubbing the area as "art country."

Syracuse native, and a veteran of playing the streets of Boston, Martin Sexton dropped by and talked a little about his experiences being on the ground with his transient, commuter audiences.  And he sang songs and talk about his album "Mixtape of the Open Road."

Local 518 group The 317 (Three Seventeen) dropped by to play songs and promote a special show at The Hangar, a tribute to the musician, poet, politician and patriot - the late, great Bobby Sands who lost his life while on a hunger strike in prison in 1981.

Though perhaps technically a singer-songwriter, Ian Fitzgerald prefers the term 'folk singer,' as it more accurately describes the tradition in which his music is rooted. From early twentieth century field recordings through Hank Williams, Bob Dylan, Gillian Welch, and hundreds of artists in between, Ian has been influenced by one of the sturdiest strains of American music.
