518 Sessions

Mike Grutka
WEXT

Local 518 singer-songwriter Mike Grutka has been with us since we began back in 2007. He entertained us with some great stories and songs at our 10th birthday party on the radio, too.  Now, Mike is back with a great new album called "Painting the Silence."

Emily Rose Burnett
WEXT

A new Local 518 Discovery for us is Emily Rose Burnett.  Her voice lit a fire under us to get her in to record a 518 Session. We look forward to hearing more from Emily in the future. She's working on finalizing the songs for her debut, and we cannot wait!

Adrenaline Pumpkin
WEXT

Every October, four guys come out of the pumpkin patch to play groovy tunes to the folks who come out to Sunnyside Gardens in Saratoga.  Johnny Twoseeds, A. Pumpkin, C. Pumpkin and O. Pumpkin are Adrenaline Pumpkin.  See these guys Saturdays and Sundays from 12-4p.

Somehow we convinced them to leave the pumpkin patch and the donuts and apple cider to come play a few tunes for us on the radio.

Jeff Brisbin
WEXT

Saratoga Springs musician, Local 518 Jeff Brisbin has released his latest album - a labor of love for sure. It's called "Foreverly." He joined us to talk about the genesis of the album, play a few songs, and share some good times.

10 String Symphony
WEXT

Rachel Baiman and Christian Sedelmyer, two 5-String fiddle players from Nashville have been making waves, both on their own and recently as 10 String Symphony. Christian plays with Jerry Douglas' band, and Rachel Baiman has her solo career, too. She released "Shame" to the world earlier this year.

Eric Krans of The Parlor
WEXT

Eric Krans of The Parlor dropped by to play us a couple love songs, and to talk about what's next with The Parlor, and The Big Veg!  For more information about Capital Roots and The Big Veg, visit their website.

Carmen Lookshire
Kiki Vassilakis Photography / http://kikivassilakis.com/

Local 518 singer-songwriter, Carmen Lookshire tells us she has an old soul, and she loves the music of the 30s and 40s.  Her sound and style may belie that, but in this session, we'll hear her sing Chris Wienk's favorite song a cappella.  Plus, she sings an old Nat "King" Cole song. In addition, we hear the song she and Kenyan pop reggae singer Mtu Saba worked on together called "Don't Ask Mommy Why."

MaryLeigh Roohan
WEXT

Local 518 MaryLeigh Roohan is working on a new album headed our way in 2018. She's playing at Caffe Lena on June 25th.  If you can make it to the show, you will get a preview CD with songs that are still in progress on their way to the album.

Make sure you return for some cool videos of the songs she plays in the session.

For more information about the show at Caffe Lena, click here.

Peter Annello
WEXT

16 year old guitarist and singer songwriter, Peter Annello dropped by to play some songs and talk about his influences and songwriting.  Watch for Peter at various area open mics. His favorite is at Caffe Lena.  He is expanding the places and types of shows he's playing out at.  Get out and support the Local 518.

Sydney Worthley
AMG Photography

There's a new Local 518 rising star. Her name is Sydney Worthley.  We could have been knocked over with a feather when we learned she was a mere 14 years old. Her lyrics belie that age. She has a mature outlook on life, and has a very powerful voice.

Sydney's CD release show is to be scheduled soon.

Take a listen to her session below. And visit her website to learn more.

The 317
WEXT

Local 518 group The 317 (Three Seventeen) dropped by to play songs and promote a special show at The Hangar, a tribute to the musician, poet, politician and patriot - the late, great Bobby Sands who lost his life while on a hunger strike in prison in 1981.

For more information on the concert that will feature other Local 518 luminaries such as Kevin McKrell, Brian McCann, Mikki Bakken, The Good Things Band, and Battenkill, go to The Hangar's Facebook page.

Hear the session below.

Hamilton Craig
WEXT

A visit from new Local 518 folk artist, Hamilton Craig where he talks with us about his album "Somebody I Saw In A Dream."  In the conversation, he mentions how he's a fan of Cole Porter and Young Thug.  Find out how rap, pop and traditional folk music have influenced Hamilton.  In addition to a couple of the songs from his album, Hamilton shares a song not on the album.

Bryan Thomas
WEXT

Local 518 singer-songwriter, Bryan Thomas (from the Soul Rock Capital of the Universe) brings it with a new session featuring songs from his latest "tiny album," "Songs About Books About Writers."  He even throws in a brand new song - just two days old.

WEXT

MaryLeigh Roohan w/Jen Trani
WEXT

Local 518 MaryLeigh Roohan dropped by to share some new songs she's been working on with guitarist, songwriter Jen Trani from LA. The two met while out on two separate tours that bumped into each other one night. Friends and a songwriting team were made. Come back soon to hear the full session which airs on WEXT Thursday, February 23 at 1130p, and Saturday, February 25 at 630p.

The New McKrells
WEXT

Kevin McKrell has traveled the world bringing his brand of Local 518 folk with Irish roots to the Four Corners of the world.  Recently, he brought a newly minted "New" McKrells to visit with us and play a few songs before they went to play at Caffe Lena (February 23, 2017).

Enjoy the session with the "New" McKrells from our 518 Sessions series.

Sean Rowe's voice, a room-rattling baritone, demands attention. The stories he tells with it are portraits that feel simple on the surface... they never are. Within "Gas Station Rose," Sean Rowe is on the road with a partner, they have each other, not much else. Even this little scene is filled with tension:

Molly Durnin
WEXT

Local 518 singer-songwriter, Molly Durnin dropped by to play some songs from the album she'll be producing this year. She expects to have it ready this summer.  It's been about 4 years since we heard her debut album.

Molly is working with Indiegogo to crowd-fund her second album.  For more information on that, visit her Indigiegogo page

We've been long time fans of this incredibly talented brother and sister duo from Fort Plain!

We first caught a glimpse of their brilliance on stage during a Music on Mainstreet in Canajoharie event when they were fresh-faced teenagers!  Now upperclassmen at Harvard University, these sibling rockers continue to amaze us with their drive, determination and music!
