Each month, we ask music curators at public radio stations across the country to introduce us to one new song they can't stop spinning. In April, these denizens of the left side of the dial loved songs by Brooklyn electric-folk band Big Thief, Philadelphia power-pop quintet Sheer Mag, Louisiana garage-rock outfit Seratones and more. Hear all 10 selections below.

Robbie Fulks
Artist

"…a masterly, multifaceted songwriter who can belt out hip-shaking honky tonk, honeydew pop and chilling little ballads with an unrivaled skill and spirit. So good, he's scary."-Chicago Tribune Robbie plays by nobody's rules - except the ones he hears in his head.  He is prodigiously talented, with the soul of a country singer and the mind of a vaudevillian.  Besides, his scorn for the music industry makes ours look positively prosaic.

The Hackensaw Boys are back. The old-time string band has made its own brand of music since 1999, after getting together in Charlottesville, Va. — and though its lineup has changed and its sound mellowed, the group is still going strong. Members David Sickmen, Ferd Moyse and Brian Gorby joined NPR's Scott Simon to talk about the new album Charismo; hear their conversation at the audio link.

Olivia Quillio
Artist

Olivia Quillio captured our hearts something like so years ago with "Easy Killer." Show after show, she continues to thrill us with her passionate performances that transport her and us to another place, another time. Come see as she opens our two afternoon Local 518 music at Tulip Fest. Tulip Fest is Local 51 at the Lakehouse, both Saturday, May 7 and Sunday, May 8. Olivia takes the stage Saturday at 1pm.

Love and loss often inspire creativity. Aisha Burns' second solo album Argonauta is about the places where grief meets hope. What makes this album distinct is that it was written in response to a great loss in Aisha Burns' life — her mother's death — which occurred alongside the beginning of a great romance.

Who do you still know from eighth grade? And what's your relationship? Do you check in on Facebook to see how many kids, pets and houses they have? Or have you built an entire career together and made it work for decades, like the co-frontmen of the band Dr. Dog?

All Songs Considered's Robin Hilton is joined by NPR Music's Rodney Carmichael, Stefanie Fernández, Lars Gotrich, Stephen Thompson and World Cafe host Talia Schlanger for a quick run through the best new albums out on May 25. That includes the highly anticipated (and instant classic) Daytona from rapper Pusha-T, reggaetón hit maker J Balvin, raw and ragged rock from Thunderpussy, effervescent synth-pop from CHVRCHES and more.
